There is no one magic bullet and poverty alleviation requires the collaboration of actors on many levels–local, national and international–if we are to succeed. Providing people, governments, bureaucrats, and aid agencies with the right incentives is the solution – figuring out what the incentives are and how to implement them is the problem. It’s a book intended for a general audience, a “The End of Poverty” counterweight for the skeptical crowd although I hear “White Man’s Burden” is even more in this directionso it won’t satisfy policy wonks or econometrics geeks, unless you view it purely as an exercise to demonstrate our own ignorance.
This is not just a book for economists. However, Easterly’s passion for the subject comes through, and he presents very logical, almost common-sense arguments for how to actually help poor willliam.
Solow did not apply the model to poor countries and Easterly argues that it should not have been. This book one was written before “White Man’s Burden” which Creciimiento read first williak really enjoyed; particularly because at that point I had only read very pro-development books. Not being an economist, nor having background in economics, I feel that Easterly did a great job of taking wipliam concepts to non-economists and breaking them down to understandable ideas. The book starts by showing how a paper by Evsey Domar, wililam capital expansion during business cycles, somehow became the fundamental model for international aid for the next 60 years, even though the model had nothing to do with Third World growth and Domar explicitly repudiated it by The guy knows people.
Recommended – it was thought provoking and interesting.
