Sophie’s love for Otto was beautiful and their obstacles and adventures together seemed very real but dramatic at the same time. Their parents are divorced and Sophie is visiting her mom for the summer. He wanted more money from …more Hello,the man wanted enough money to get himself back to his family and to support him self clothes,food,etc. In a time of war, that is accurate to have happen, but I suppose I thought the grieving time for the main character, Sophie, would be a bit longer and that the recognition of these kind people being mercilessly killed would be greater. While the sudden time shift at the very end is thrust upon the reader without warning, the last chapter brought closure for the reader and raised awareness for the emotional intelligence of these incredible creatures.

I did, however, enjoy the relationship between Sophie and Otto her bonono ape and was particularly interested in the personalities of shrefer various bonobos who lived in the sanctuary. These stories need to be heard. Purchase this one for both middle school and high school libraries.

Schrefer presents them truthfully, at times terrifyingly, and sensitively all bt through Sophie’s eyes. This book is an upper YA, and although I enjoyed it, it would’ve made my eyes huge with wonder and shock as a fourteen year old unaware schrefed the history of the Congo. Books by Eliot Schrefer. But my latest, about a girl keeping herself and an orphan bonobo alive in a country at war, is so far outside my own lived interior space that I found it much easier to write endangerdd convincingly. This relationship between a peace-loving ape and its surrogate mother, and this growing bond, are the focus of the narrative against the backdrop of the typical violence, fear, violation and desperation that a corrupt, weakened war-torn nation brings.

This is the last book I read in for the Around the World challenge, and I thought Schrefer was equally insightful about the problems of the Democratic Republic of the Congo where this book takes place.
