I do not recommend this textbook to anyone trying to learn about syntax in a straightforward and understandinv way. What is interesting here is R’sjuxtaposition ofa deep case examination of Shakespeare in English with a translation of Shakespeare into Finnish, a language with surface cases, resulting in one ofthe best explorations of deep and surface case txllerman. As a stand alone, I can imagine it being difficult to get a bead on the big picture.

Perfect Italian Intermediate Course: Can instructors please only offer it to ardent lovers of language typology who for some strange reason want an introduction to syntax.

Understanding Syntax by Maggie Tallerman

It does have good explanations and the presence of a lot of examples from a wide range of languages, but it lacks an editor to cull the amount of words – a lot of superfluous syntac and the content should be better organised. To put it differently, it doesn’t give succinct and clear theoretical explanations, followed by few relevant examples for expository purposes.

Probably any linguist will find something here of interest although the book will appeal primarily to those with a typological or functionalist bentbut Australianists in particular will relish it, not only because of the number of papers undfrstanding deal with Australian languages but also because it pays homage to one of their most accomplished colleagues.
